Projects on Fort Ord Begin to Take Shape
The redevelopment projects for Fort Ord are quickly taking shape. The plans include a regional shopping center, golf course, time-shares, hotels, horse park and thousands of homes, just to name a few projects.
Three projects given the go ahead for Marina are,
· The Dunes on Monterey Bay, previously known as University Village. The shopping center at Highway 1 and Imgin Parkway will have stores such as Target, Kohl’s, REI, Michael’s, Bed, Bath and Beyond, etc.
· Marina Heights will be a new sub-division of homes and it is planned to have these properties on the market in the Spring of 2008.
· Cypress Knolls is a senior sub-division for residents 55 and older, which will begin being built in early 2008.
Seaside projects include,
· A 550,000 square foot retail and restaurant space. The shopping center is described as a “lifestyle mall” and has been named “The Strand at Seaside”.
· A resort called “The Fairmont” will have timeshare units, single-family homes, a golf course and 330 hotel rooms.
Del Rey Oaks projects include,
· A residential-golf resort, which will be called “The Resort at Del Rey Oaks”. There will be homes, hotels, a golf course and hundreds of condominiums.
The county redevelopment project at Fort Ord called the East Garrison project is well under way. These plans include 1,400 homes, retail outlets, and an arts district. In addition to this the county is also working with Monterey Horse Park to create an equestrian center.
I’m certain the number one question on all of our minds is where is the water coming from? Or, maybe the question is, can our roads handle the traffic these developments will create? In an effort to answer the first question, I’ve heard that the golf courses will be irrigated with almost all non-potable recycled wastewater. I don’t have the answer to the infrastructure question.
