Big Sur is an awe inspiring 100 mile stretch of California coastline, which runs from south Carmel to the Monterey County line north of San Simeon. As one winds from Carmel along scenic Highway One, to the left are the majestic Santa Lucia Mountains and to the right is the drama of rugged rock and the much talked about meeting of land and sea.

Carmel Highlands is a small-unincorporated community located on the northern region of Big Sur. Franklin Devendorf and Frank Powers founded the area in 1916. According to local folklore, Scottish sailors who had jumped ship and settled named the area Carmel Highlands because of the resemblance to the Scotland coast.
